How Much Does SEO Cost in Kansas City in 2026? Published Prices Compared

By John Alewine, AI and business automation consultant and owner of Kansas City SEO Services (LinkedIn), Kansas City. Published . Updated . · Clean Markdown (.md)

SEO in Kansas City is usually a monthly retainer for showing up in Google, the map pack and AI answers. The median published entry price is $1,000 a month across the 7 of 14 local SEO sites I checked on October 25, 2026 that list prices. The trade-off: cheap plans mostly cover your Google listing, not AI search.

Bottom line

Pick a one-time listing fix if your Google Business Profile is unclaimed, wrong or messy and you serve one area.

Pick a monthly local retainer if competitors beat you in the map pack and you can commit to a short minimum.

Skip any retainer above the $1,000 median unless the quote names AI search work: crawler access, consistent listings and pages AI tools can quote.

Before you compare quotes, see whether AI tools already name you. My business, Kansas City SEO Services, runs a free AI recommendation test. I ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode your money question 3 times each, logged out, then send you the 9 answers scored plus 3 fixes.

Key facts

  • Median entry monthly SEO price among the 7 Kansas City sites that publish one: $1,000 (my audit, 2026-10-25)
  • Only 3 of 14 Kansas City SEO sites publish a price for an AI search line item (my audit)
  • Local SEO averages $1,557 per month nationally (Ahrefs, updated 2026-08-12)
  • Google users clicked a result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, versus 15% without (Pew Research Center)
  • Two top-ranking Kansas City SEO cost articles mention AI search 0 times (my audit, 2026-10-25)

What SEO pricing is, and what it is not

SEO pricing is what you pay someone to improve how your business shows up in unpaid Google results and the map pack. That is different from Google Ads, where you buy clicks and pay a management fee on top of ad spend. At my business, Kansas City SEO Services, ads management is "$1,850/mo plus ad spend" and is not required for its SEO plans.

AI search visibility is a third thing. It covers your chance of being cited or named by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini or Google AI Overviews. It overlaps with SEO more than most sellers admit. Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.

Software subscriptions such as rank trackers are tools you run yourself, so nobody does the work for you. If a quote bundles all four under "SEO," ask for each line priced separately.

Published Kansas City SEO prices, side by side

These are the providers in my sample that put a monthly SEO price on their own site, plus my own business. I loaded every page on October 25, 2026. Where my notes do not capture a term, the table says so.

Entry prices run from $299 to $1,250 a month, so "SEO" can mean very different amounts of work. Only 3 providers put a price on a named AI search item, and those items start at $999 a month. Terms matter as much as price: a 3-month minimum turns a monthly number into a bigger commitment.

Our data: what 14 Kansas City SEO websites publish

On October 25, 2026, I took the Kansas City SEO providers that showed up for "kansas city seo company," "seo agency kansas city," "local seo kansas city" and "seo pricing kansas city," plus the top results for "how much does SEO cost Kansas City." I skipped directories, dropped 2 sites that would not load and left my own business out of the counts, which left 14. For each one I loaded the homepage, any pricing or SEO service page, /llms.txt and /robots.txt.

Fewer people click through when an AI summary shows up. In a Pew Research Center study of 900 U.S. adults' browsing in March 2025, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, versus 15% without. They clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits.

Being cited still matters. In that study, 88% of AI summaries cited three or more sources, and your business can be one of them. If it is not, a ranking you paid for gets fewer clicks.

Google is plain about what its AI features need:

"There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary."

Google Search Central, "AI features and your website"

To show up as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. So good basic SEO already covers Google's AI features. ChatGPT works differently. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.

These are the line items that improve the chance of being found or quoted by AI tools:

  • Crawler access. Your robots.txt should not block OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, GPTBot or Google-Extended unless you chose to block them.
  • Server-rendered pages. Your prices, services and service area should be in the page HTML, not loaded later by scripts that crawlers may skip.
  • Answer-first copy. Put the direct answer at the start of each page so an AI tool can quote it cleanly.
  • Consistent facts. Your name, phone and hours should match across Google Business Profile, Bing Places and directories. Bing runs its own index, separate from Google, so a neglected Bing listing is a gap.
  • Reviews. Fresh reviews with replies give AI tools more to draw on about your business.
  • llms.txt and markdown copies. These are cheap to add and give AI tools a plain-text map of your site.

Nobody can guarantee that an AI assistant will recommend your business. Anyone who promises that is selling a promise. A fair quote names the work above and shows how it will be checked.

I also run Get Found with AI (my business), which tests AI visibility across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity.

My pick for most single-location Kansas City service businesses: Fix the listing first. Use a one-time fix, check your robots.txt yourself, and only sign a local retainer if the map pack is still crowded after that. Pay for a separate AI tier only once crawler access and listings are clean.

How to check an SEO quote, step by step

1. Run your own AI prompt test

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the question your customers ask, such as "who is a good plumber near Lee's Summit." Do it logged out and save the answers.

Time: A few minutes.

Done when: You have saved answers showing whether you are named, and who is named instead.

2. Check your robots.txt

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt in a browser. Look for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, GPTBot and Google-Extended next to a Disallow line.

Time: A few minutes.

Done when: None of them is blocked, or you know why one is.

3. List the deliverables per month

Write down what the quote promises each month: posts, photos, citation cleanup, Bing upkeep, page edits, reports. If an item has no count or schedule, ask for one.

Time: One sitting.

Done when: Every dollar maps to a named task.

4. Compare it to the published table

Put the quote next to the price table above. A quote well above the $1,000 median should name more work, especially AI search work.

Time: One sitting.

Done when: You can explain in one sentence why this quote costs what it does.

5. Check the contract term and minimum

Find the minimum term and multiply it by the monthly price. A 3-month minimum at $1,150 is $1,150 x 3 = $3,450.

Time: A few minutes.

Done when: You know your total commitment before month one.

6. Ask who owns the accounts

Your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, analytics, domain and website should be in your name. If the provider owns them, leaving gets messy.

Time: One email.

Done when: You have it in writing that you own every account.

Mistakes that cost the most

Signing a minimum before you know what is broken

A 3-month minimum at $1,150 is $1,150 x 3 = $3,450. At $1,200 it is $1,200 x 3 = $3,600. If the real problem was a wrong category or old hours, you paid for months of upkeep on a broken base.

Fix: Run the free checks first, then decide between a one-time fix and a retainer.

Paying for AI work while your site blocks the crawler

Kansas City SEO Pros prices Local SEO + AI at $999 and Local SEO at $599, so the step up to the AI tier is $999 minus $599 = $400 a month, or $400 x 12 = $4,800 a year. If your robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI says ChatGPT search will not show your site, whatever else you pay for.

Fix: Check robots.txt yourself before you pay for any AI tier.

Buying an agency retainer for a one-listing problem

Three months at the low end of Dorian Media Group's local agency range is $1,500 x 3 = $4,500. A one-time Listing Fix from my business is $795. That gap is $4,500 minus $795 = $3,705.

Fix: Match the size of the spend to the size of the problem.

Verdict for each kind of reader

One-time listing fix or audit

Best for: A single location with a messy, unclaimed or outdated listing.

Score: 8/10 (my judgment against the weighted criteria)

Trade-off: It fixes the base but does not keep it fresh, so competitors can catch up.

Map pack or local retainer

Best for: A service business in a crowded map area that wants steady upkeep.

Score: 7/10 (my judgment against the weighted criteria; my business sells this option)

Trade-off: Minimum terms raise the total commitment, and many plans name no AI search work.

AI search retainer

Best for: Businesses whose customers already ask AI tools who to hire.

Score: 7/10 (my judgment against the weighted criteria)

Trade-off: It costs more, and tracking prompts does not fix blocked crawlers or bad listings by itself.

Full-service agency retainer

Best for: Multi-location or content-heavy businesses.

Score: 5/10 (my judgment against the weighted criteria)

Trade-off: Prices are often quote-only, and the scope is more than one location needs.

  • If you are a single-location contractor with a messy listing: start with a one-time listing fix. Watch out for a minimum term signed before anything is diagnosed.
  • If you are in a crowded map area: start with a local retainer that names posts, photos and citation cleanup. Watch out for plans that never mention Bing.
  • If customers already ask ChatGPT for your service: start with a free AI prompt test. Watch out for AI tiers that track prompts but never check crawler access.
  • If you have several locations: start with per-location pricing. Watch out for flat fees that hide how much work each location gets.
  • If you need calls this week: start with Google Ads. Watch out for management fees quoted without the ad spend.

If you are comparing people instead of plans, see my guide to choosing an SEO consultant in Kansas City.

Who this is not for

  • National ecommerce stores. Local map pack plans do not cover large product catalogs or national rankings. A better fit is an agency with published national tiers, such as the higher plans in the table above.
  • Multi-state brands. Per-location Kansas City pricing adds up fast across many states. Look for a provider that prices multi-location work as one program.
  • Businesses that need paid leads this week. SEO and AI visibility take time to show up. Google Ads is the faster lever. And if leads are calling but nobody answers, check the missed-call revenue calculator and my AI receptionist cost guide first.

What Kansas City SEO Services charges (my business)

Disclosure: Kansas City SEO Services is my business. These are the prices on its pricing page and local SEO cost page, checked October 25, 2026.

  • Free Map Pack Check: A 5-minute screen recording of your Google listing compared with nearby competitors. No charge, no retainer.
  • Listing Fix, $795 one time: I claim or recover your Google Business Profile and fix categories, hours, service area, description and photos, plus Bing Places, core directories and name, address and phone cleanup. It credits 100% to Map Pack if you start within 60 days.
  • Map Pack, $1,150 per month: 3-month minimum, launch fee waived. Weekly Google posts, photo and Q&A upkeep, review request coaching and reply drafts, citation monitoring and cleanup, Bing listing maintenance and monthly written notes. I take one business per category per map area.
  • Metro, $1,850 per month for the first location, $890 for each extra location: Everything in Map Pack, plus more frequent posting and photos and a watch on categories and competitors.

Not included: Google Ads management is separate and not required, at "$1,850/mo plus ad spend." There is no separate paid AI tier. The free AI recommendation test sends you 9 scored answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, plus 3 fixes.

I do not promise rankings, calls or AI recommendations. The work improves the chance of being found or cited. You can read more about me and how I build and run my own businesses.

How I put this together

On October 25, 2026, I checked the three pages that rank for "how much does SEO cost in Kansas City" alongside my audit of 14 provider sites.

  • Dorian Media Group: Does well with clear price bands for freelancers, local agencies and competitive work, plus audit and hourly figures. Misses: no date shown, ranges not tied to named providers, and zero mentions of ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, AEO or GEO.
  • Kansas City SEO Pros pricing guide: Does well by being recent (published October 3, 2026) and coming from a vendor that publishes its own plan prices. Misses: AI search is mentioned once, and it is a vendor's guide to its own market and plans.
  • TCB Studio: Does well with a dated, simple table by service type, including audit, local setup and hourly rates. Misses: zero mentions of AI search, and no named provider prices.

This guide adds: a linked side-by-side of 7 published Kansas City price lists, a first-party audit of 14 provider sites with a downloadable CSV, robots.txt and llms.txt checks, primary sources from Google, OpenAI and Pew on AI search, and a step-by-step way to check any quote. Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost per month in Kansas City?

Published entry plans in Kansas City run from $299 to $1,250 per month, with a median of $1,000 among the 7 of 14 provider sites I checked on October 25, 2026 that publish prices. Top published tiers reach $12,000+ per month for enterprise work. Nationally, Ahrefs puts the average local SEO retainer at $1,557 per month.

Is SEO worth it for a small business in Kansas City?

It can be, if the plan fixes what customers and AI tools actually check: your Google listing, your Bing listing, consistent business facts and clear service pages. Start with the cheapest step that fixes a visible problem, such as a one-time listing fix, before you sign a monthly minimum. Nobody can promise rankings or AI recommendations, so judge a plan by its named deliverables.

Does SEO pricing include ChatGPT and AI Overviews?

Usually not as a named, priced item: only 3 of the 14 Kansas City SEO sites I checked publish a price for an AI search line item. Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet, so basic SEO covers part of it. ChatGPT search is different: OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.

How much does local SEO cost in Kansas City?

Published local SEO plans in Kansas City start at $299 per month for Google Business Profile upkeep and run past $1,000 per month for fuller map pack work. Ahrefs reports local SEO averages $1,557 per month nationally. A one-time listing fix, such as the $795 Listing Fix from my business, Kansas City SEO Services, is a lower-cost place to start.

Why do Kansas City SEO prices vary so much?

Plans cover very different work: a $299 plan may cover one Google listing, while $5,000+ plans cover content, competitive markets or several locations. Term length, number of locations and whether AI search work is included all move the price. Compare deliverables per month, not plan names.

How long is a typical SEO contract in Kansas City?

Published terms range from month-to-month to a 3-month minimum. Kansas City SEO Pros and Vox Pop Marketing advertise month-to-month or no long-term contract, while KC AI SEO and the Map Pack plan at my business, Kansas City SEO Services, use a 3-month minimum. Multiply the monthly price by the minimum to see your real commitment, for example $1,150 x 3 = $3,450.

What does Kansas City SEO Services charge?

Kansas City SEO Services is my business. It charges $795 one time for a Listing Fix, $1,150 per month for Map Pack with a 3-month minimum, and $1,850 per month for Metro plus $890 for each extra location. The Map Pack Check and the AI recommendation test are free, and Google Ads management is separate at $1,850/mo plus ad spend.

Before you sign anything, run the free AI recommendation test from my business, Kansas City SEO Services, to see whether AI tools name you today. Or email your quote to [email protected], and I will tell you plainly how it compares.
