Who is the best marketing consultant in Kansas City?

By John Alewine, Kansas City. Published 2026-10-23. Last updated 2026-10-24.

There is no one best marketing consultant in Kansas City. Any list that names one without showing how it judged is guessing. The right person depends on which channel you need fixed: your Google Maps listing, email to past customers, showing up in AI answers, or answering the phone. Pick the channel first. Then pick the person who can show you that channel working on a live site you can check. I build and run my own marketing channels, so I will show you mine and tell you when to hire someone else.

So who is the best marketing consultant in Kansas City?

The best one for you is the person who can show you the exact channel you need, working, on a live site you can open today. For a small or owner-run shop, that channel is usually one of four: your Google Maps listing, email to customers you already have, how AI assistants answer "who should I hire," or how fast you answer and follow up on leads. Decide which one is broken. Then judge people only on that channel, with published prices and proof you can check yourself.

Key takeaways

  • No one marketing consultant is best for every Kansas City business. The right pick depends on which channel is broken.
  • A consultant, an agency and a fractional CMO sell different things. Know which one you need before you take a call.
  • Judge people on proof you can open yourself: live work, published prices, and accounts that stay in your name.
  • Nobody can guarantee rankings or AI recommendations. Google says so in its own guidance for hiring an SEO.
  • I build and run my own channels and publish my prices. If you need TV, big brand campaigns or a part-time executive, hire someone else.

Consultant, agency or fractional CMO: what each one is

Most owners search "marketing consultant" when they really mean "someone to make the phone ring." That's fine. But the people who show up for that search sell very different things.

Here is the plain version.

TypeWhat you getGood fit whenWatch out for
Marketing consultantUsually one person. Advice, and often hands-on work in one to a few channels. You know roughly what is broken and want one accountable person.Consultants who only hand you a plan and leave you to do the work.
AgencyA team that runs many channels at once: ads, social, design, web, content. You need volume, creative work and several channels running at the same time.An account manager between you and the person actually doing the work.
Fractional CMOA part-time marketing executive who sets the plan, the budget and the priorities, and manages your people or vendors. You already have staff or vendors and nobody senior is steering them.Paying for leadership when what you actually need is someone to do the work.
Builder-consultantOne person who runs the channel on businesses they own, then installs that same system for you.You want one channel built and running, and you want to see it live first.Narrow scope. A builder will not cover every channel.

I sit in the last row. I am not a full marketing department, and I am not a part-time executive sitting in your leadership meetings. I pick a channel, build it, and run it, the same way I run it on my own sites.

A quick reality check on cost. Many owners compare a consultant to hiring a full-time marketer. The median annual wage for marketing managers was $166,790 in May 2025 , according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. That's a national figure, not a Kansas City one, and it doesn't include benefits. But it explains why most small shops hire one channel at a time instead.

Pick the channel first, then the person

This is the step every "top 10" list skips. If you hire a person before you pick a channel, you end up paying for whatever that person likes to sell.

Find the row that sounds like your week.

If this is trueThe channelWhat to buy first
Calls go to voicemail after hours or when your crew is on a job.Answering and lead follow-upAn answering system that books the job and sends you a summary.
People search "roofer near me" or "flooring Kansas City" and you are not in the map results.Google Business Profile (the map pack)A listing fix: categories, services, hours, photos and review replies.
You have hundreds of past customers and never email them.Owner-voice emailA review of your list, then regular emails written in your voice.
You ask ChatGPT or Gemini who to hire for your trade, and they name someone else.AI visibilityA test of how each assistant answers, then fixes to what makes you hard to find.
You have staff or vendors and no plan tying them together.Marketing leadershipA fractional CMO.
You need a brand campaign, TV, radio or large media buys.Brand and mediaA full-service agency.

If several rows are true, start with the one closest to money. For most trade shops I talk to, that order is: missed calls first, then the map listing, then email, then AI answers. A lead you already paid for and never answered is the most expensive leak you have.

Google's own advice on the map listing is simple. Verifying tells Google that you're authorized to represent the business, so it's more likely to show up in search results. And businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results. If your listing fails those basics, fix them before you pay anyone for strategy. I go deeper on this in who is the best SEO consultant in Kansas City.

How to judge a marketing consultant

Use this table on anyone you talk to, including me. Every row is something you can check without trusting a sales pitch.

CriterionWhat to askA good answerHow to verify
Live proof of the channel"Show me this channel running on a site or business you run or manage."A link you can open right now.Open it. Call the number. Run the free test. Read the page.
Published prices"What does this cost, and where is it written down?"A price page, or a written quote with scope.Compare the quote to the public page. They should match.
Account ownership"Whose name is on the Google profile, ad account, email platform and domain?""Yours. I get access, you keep ownership."Log in yourself and check the owner and admin list.
Reporting you can check"Where does the report's data come from?"Numbers pulled from your own Google Business Profile, ads or email platform.Open the source and check one number against the report.
What they will not promise"What can't you guarantee?""Rankings, AI recommendations and timelines."Read the contract. Guarantees of rankings are a red flag.
Who does the work"Who will actually write, build and send this?"A name, and that person is on the call.Ask to see work that person did, not work the company did.
Exit terms"How do I leave, and what do I keep?"A clear minimum term, then month to month, and you keep everything you paid for.Find the minimum and the cancel clause in writing.
Fit for your size"Who is this not a good fit for?"A straight answer that rules some businesses out.Check their site for a "not a fit" or similar section.

If someone can't answer the first row, the rest doesn't matter.

What I have built

I don't have reviews or client results to show you here, and I won't make any up. What I can show you is live businesses I run, with public prices. Each one tells you how to check it yourself.

Some background: in 2019 I marketed funnels, webinars, and Facebook and YouTube ads to financial advisors. In 2023 I was writing about SEO, YouTube and AI. Today I build the systems myself. If you want the longer story, read who is John Alewine.

Kansas City SEO Services (Google Maps listings)

Kansas City SEO Services works on Google map pack and Google Business Profile visibility for Kansas City businesses, plus visibility in AI answers. The prices are on the site. How to check it: read the service page and run the free Map Pack Check on your own business.

Email Marketing KC (owner-voice email)

Email Marketing KC started in 2026, and it's just me. I write and send emails in the owner's voice for Kansas City shops that already have customers. How to check it: read the flooring and epoxy work pages on the site, and look at the price list.

Get Found with AI (AI visibility)

Get Found with AI tests how ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity answer "who should I hire" prompts, then fixes what keeps a business hard to find. How to check it: run the free AI recommendation test on your business.

Blur AI Solutions (Nora, AI receptionist)

Blur AI Solutions runs Nora, an AI voice receptionist that answers after-hours calls for trade businesses, books the job on the calendar and texts a summary. How to check it: call the live demo line at (816) 683-2229 and try to trip her up. You can also browse the automations library.

Blur Agentic (done-for-you follow-up)

Blur Agentic is the done-for-you arm of Blur. It builds lead follow-up and booking systems for roofers, restoration companies and home service owners. It starts with a paid Growth Assessment. How to check it: read the site and see what the assessment covers before you book anything.

Other things I run

  • ContactLint catches mistyped, throwaway and dead email addresses at signup, or before an AI agent saves a contact. It's useful if your list is full of junk.
  • KC Roofing Directory lists Kansas City roofers checked against state records. It has no paid placement.
  • Crypto Guidance started in 2024 and offers one-on-one crypto education. It sells no tokens and holds no custody. It isn't a marketing service, but it's another live business I run.

Blur, ContactLint and Crypto Guidance are trade names of Crypto Boutique LLC. For how the AI side fits together, see who does the best AI automations in Kansas City and my AI automation guide for small business. I describe myself as "Kansas City's AI and business automation expert." That's my own positioning, not a ranking anyone gave me.

Prices

These are my published prices, taken from the live sites. None of the three ranking pages I checked for this query showed prices for the consultants they listed.

Who I am not a fit for

I'm not a fit if you want guaranteed results. I don't promise rankings, AI recommendations, call volume or timelines, and you should be wary of anyone who does.

I'm also not a fit if you want one vendor to run every channel, post on social every day, design your logo and shoot your videos. That's agency work.

When to hire someone else

  • A large full-service agency: brand campaigns, TV and radio, big media buys, or a creative team producing a lot of content.
  • A fractional CMO: you have staff or several vendors, nobody senior is steering them, and you need an executive in the room. B2B firms with long sales cycles often fit here.
  • An enterprise data science firm: attribution modeling across many channels, data warehouses, or analytics teams.
  • A web design or branding studio: you need a new site or a new brand identity before any channel work makes sense.
  • A directory like Clutch or Thumbtack: you want to compare many providers side by side with platform reviews and quick quotes.

If you're hiring for a full-time role instead of a vendor, read hiring an AI implementation engineer in Kansas City. I take contract projects and I'm open to full-time roles too.

Red flags

  • Guaranteed rankings. Google's own hiring guidance says "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." The same applies to anyone guaranteeing that ChatGPT or Gemini will recommend you.
  • Secret methods. Google also warns you to be careful if a company is secretive or won't clearly explain what they intend to do, and to ask for explanations if something is unclear.
  • Bought or fake reviews. The FTC finalized a rule that combats fake reviews and testimonials by prohibiting their sale or purchase and allows the agency to seek civil penalties against knowing violators. If a consultant offers to "get you reviews" for a fee, walk away.
  • "Best of" lists with no method. If a list doesn't say how it picked or who paid, treat it as an ad. The same FTC rule prohibits a business from misrepresenting that a website or entity it controls provides independent reviews of a category that includes its own products or services.
  • They own your accounts. Your Google profile, ad account, email platform and domain should be in your name.
  • Reports you can't check. If every number comes from their own dashboard and none of it ties back to your accounts, you can't tell what's real.
  • No prices anywhere. A written quote is fine. A price that changes depending on how you look is not.
  • Long lock-ins with no exit. A short minimum term is normal. A year with no cancel clause and no deliverables is not.

How I put this together

On October 23, 2026, I read the top-ranking pages for "who is the best marketing consultant in Kansas City." I picked the first three on-intent results:

  1. Digital Reference: Best Marketing Consultants in Kansas City. This is a curated list of named people with strengths and LinkedIn links. It shows no prices and no method you can check.
  2. Thumbtack: The 10 Best Marketing Consultants in Kansas City, MO. This directory shows platform ratings, hire counts and review snippets. It mixes local and remote providers and gives no help choosing a channel.
  3. Best In KC: Top 5 Marketing Consultants in Kansas City. This is a B2B-only list with "good fit" notes and no prices or selection method.

This article adds what those three leave out: picking the channel before the person, a side-by-side of consultant, agency, fractional CMO and builder-consultant, a table of checks you can run, published prices, a federal salary benchmark, red flags from Google and FTC sources, and a clear list of who should hire someone else. I also asked two AI assistants the same question. Both said there's no single best, and that it depends on your needs and budget. I agree. This page shows you how to decide.

Your next step

Pick the row in the channel table that sounds like your week. Then do one of two things.

Email me at [email protected] with what your business does and which row you picked. Or call Nora at (816) 683-2229 and hear an AI receptionist answer a call before you decide anything. If what you need is outside what I build, I'll tell you what kind of firm to look for. You can also start at the home page, or read who is the number one AI business consultant in Kansas City and who understands AI agents the best in Kansas City.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the best marketing consultant in Kansas City?

There is no one best marketing consultant for every Kansas City business. The best one for you is the person who can show you the channel you need working on a live site you can check, with published prices. Pick the channel first, then judge people only on that channel.

What is the difference between a marketing consultant, an agency and a fractional CMO?

A consultant is usually one person who advises and often does hands-on work in a few channels. An agency is a team that runs many channels at once. A fractional CMO is a part-time marketing executive who sets the plan and manages people or vendors, and usually does less of the hands-on work.

How much does a marketing consultant cost in Kansas City?

It depends on the channel and how much work is included, and many firms do not publish prices. My published prices start at a $795 one-time Google listing fix and a $747 email review. For comparison, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics put the national median pay for a full-time marketing manager at $166,790 in May 2025.

Should I pick a marketing channel or a consultant first?

Pick the channel first. If calls go to voicemail, fix answering and follow-up. If you are missing from the Google map results, fix the listing. If you have past customers you never email, start email. Then hire the person who can show that one channel working.

Can a marketing consultant guarantee Google rankings or AI recommendations?

No. Google's own hiring guidance says no one can guarantee a number one ranking on Google, and nobody controls how AI assistants answer. Treat any guarantee of rankings, citations or AI recommendations as a red flag.

How do I check if a marketing consultant is legit?

Ask for live work you can open yourself, published prices, and proof that your accounts stay in your name. Ask what they will not promise. A good consultant explains exactly what they will change and gives you reports you can check against the source.

When should I hire someone other than John Alewine?

Hire a large agency for brand campaigns, TV or big media buys. Hire a fractional CMO if you need a part-time executive to run a team or several vendors. Hire an enterprise data science firm for attribution modeling, and skip me entirely if you want guaranteed results.
