Who is the best SEO consultant in Kansas City?

By John Alewine, Kansas City. Published 2026-10-23. Last updated 2026-10-24.

There is no single best SEO consultant in Kansas City. Anyone who tells you they are the best is selling something. The right person depends on what you need people to find: your Google Maps listing, your website, or your name in AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. I run an SEO service business here, so I have a stake in this. This page shows you how to judge any consultant, including me, using checks you can do yourself.

So who is the best SEO consultant in Kansas City for my business?

The best one for you can show you live work you can check, explains what they will change in plain English, lets you own every account, and refuses to guarantee rankings. Google says this outright: no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. If you need your map listing fixed, a solo consultant or a small shop is often enough. If you have a large site or a national store, hire a bigger team. Use the table below to test anyone you talk to.

Key takeaways

  • There is no one best SEO consultant in Kansas City. The right fit depends on whether you need map listings, website pages or AI answers fixed.
  • Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. Anyone who promises first place is a reason to keep looking.
  • Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. A good consultant can explain all three, and can explain why distance is out of your control.
  • SEO now includes AI answers. Google says its AI features run on the same Search basics, so steer clear of anyone selling a secret AI trick.
  • You should own your Google Business Profile, Search Console and website. During an audit, give read-only access only.

What an SEO consultant is (and is not)

An SEO consultant is a person who figures out why customers cannot find you in search, then fixes it or tells you exactly how to.

For a Kansas City business, that usually means four things: your Google Business Profile, your website pages, how you get and answer reviews, and now how AI assistants describe you when someone asks who to hire.

An SEO consultant is not an ad buyer, though some do both. Ads are paid placement. SEO is earned. They are also not automatically a web designer, a review farm or a guarantee.

If you want the broader picture, with email, ads and messaging included, read my page on choosing a marketing consultant in Kansas City.

SEO consultant vs SEO company: which do you need?

Both can do good work. The difference is who shows up, how much they can handle at once, and what you pay for overhead.

QuestionSolo consultantSEO company or agency
Who does the work?Usually the person you met.Often a team. The person who sells may not be the person who works.
Best forLocal service businesses, one or a few locations, map listing and key page fixes.Large sites, national stores, many locations, heavy content and link work.
CapacityLimited. One person has only so many hours.More hands, more specialists.
Speed of answersOften direct. You talk to the person doing it.Depends on the account manager.
RiskIf they get sick or quit, work stops.Staff turnover can mean a new person learning your business.

My take: most local shops I talk to have a broken listing and a thin website. That is a job for one sharp person, not a team of twelve.

If your problem is mostly the Google map pack and you want someone to do the work for you, my service page at Kansas City SEO Services covers that directly. This page is about judging the person.

How Google ranks local businesses

Any consultant you hire should know this cold. It comes straight from Google.

Google's Business Profile help center says "Local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence."

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches what someone searched. Google says businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results.
  • Distance: how far you are from the searcher, or from the area they typed. You cannot change this. Be careful with anyone who says they can.
  • Prominence: how well known you are. On reviews, Google's help page says "More reviews and positive ratings can improve your business's local ranking."

Google also says to verify your business , because that tells Google you are authorized to represent it. It also recommends replying to customer reviews .

A good test: ask a consultant how local ranking works. If they don't bring up these three factors, or they promise to beat distance, keep looking.

SEO now includes AI answers

People still search Google. They also ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok and Perplexity who to hire. And Google itself now puts AI answers at the top of many results.

Google explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode surface relevant links to help people find the information they're looking for . It also says both features may use a "query fan-out" technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response.

So the basics still matter. Google's documentation says "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." Traffic from these features shows up in your regular reports, too. Google says sites appearing in AI features (such as AI Overviews and AI Mode) are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console.

What changes is the checking. A good consultant runs real "who should I hire" prompts in named assistants, shows you the actual answers and fixes what keeps you hard to find: missing facts, a thin website, inconsistent listings. They should never promise that an assistant will recommend you. Nobody controls that.

I built a free tool for exactly this check. It is linked below.

How to judge an SEO consultant in Kansas City

Ask every person you talk to the same questions. Then check their answers yourself. The table is built so you don't have to take anyone's word for it, mine included.

What to askWhat a good answer looks likeHow to verify it
"Show me something live that you built or run."Links to live sites or listings, not just screenshots.Visit them. Search the business names. See if they exist and work.
"What do you guarantee?"Specific work and deliverables. Not rankings.Compare to Google's hiring guide, which says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking.
"Who owns my Google Business Profile, Search Console, analytics and website?"You do. They get manager or user access.Check the user list in your Business Profile and Search Console. You should be the owner.
"What access do you need for the audit?"Read-only access to start.Google advises read access only to Search Console at the audit stage.
"What will you change in the first 30 days?"A plain, specific list: categories, services, pages, review process.Get it in writing. Check each item off yourself.
"How does Google rank local results?"Relevance, distance, prominence, and honesty that distance cannot be changed.Compare to Google's local ranking help page.
"How do you check whether AI assistants mention us?"They run named prompts in named assistants and show you the answers. No promises.Ask for the exact prompts. Run them yourself.
"What will I see each month?"Calls, form fills, direction requests and listing views, not only a ranking list.Ask for a sample report before you sign.
"What does it cost, and how do I leave?"A written price, a clear minimum and a clear exit.Read the contract. Look for auto-renewals and cancellation fees.
"Who actually does the work?"A named person you can talk to.Ask to meet them. Ask what happens if they leave.

An 8-step way to compare them

  1. Write down the one thing you need found: map listing, website, or AI answers.
  2. Pick three people or firms to talk to. A directory can help you build the list.
  3. Ask each one the same questions from the table above.
  4. Visit every piece of live work they give you.
  5. Give read-only access for any audit. Nothing more.
  6. Get a written 30-day plan and a written price from each.
  7. Toss anyone who guarantees rankings or won't explain their methods.
  8. Pick the one whose plan you understand and whose work you could verify.

What I have built (check it yourself)

I describe myself as Kansas City's AI and business automation expert. That is how I position myself, not a ranking from anyone else. More on my background is on my about page.

I build and run my own businesses. All of them are live. Here are the ones that matter for SEO and how you can check each one.

  • Kansas City SEO Services: Google map pack and Google Business Profile work for Kansas City businesses, plus visibility in AI answers. Prices are published on the site. Check it: visit the site, read the prices and try the free Map Pack Check.
  • Get Found with AI: tests how ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity answer "who should I hire" prompts, then fixes what keeps a business hard to find. Check it: run the free AI recommendation test on your own business.
  • KC Roofing Directory: Kansas City roofers checked against state records, with no paid placement. Check it: open a listing and compare it to the state record yourself.
  • Email Marketing KC: I write and send owner-voice emails for Kansas City shops that already have customers. Check it: the site shows prices and work pages for flooring and epoxy.
  • Blur AI Solutions: Nora, an AI voice receptionist that answers after-hours calls for trade businesses, books the job and texts a summary. Check it: call the live demo line at (816) 683-2229.
  • Blur Agentic: done-for-you lead follow-up and booking systems for roofers, restoration and home service owners. Check it: visit the site and read how the paid Growth Assessment works.
  • ContactLint: catches mistyped, throwaway and dead email addresses at signup, or before an AI agent saves a contact. Check it: visit the site.

Why does an AI and automation person run an SEO business? Because getting found is only half the job. The other half is answering the call and following up. I cover that side in who does the best AI automations in Kansas City and in my guide to AI automation for small business.

What it costs: published prices

These are my published prices at Kansas City SEO Services. I'm listing them so you have a real number to compare against.

ServicePriceWhat it is
Map Pack CheckFreeA look at where your listing stands.
Listing Fix$795 one timeGoogle Business Profile cleanup.
Map Pack$1,150/mo (3-month minimum)Ongoing map pack work.
Metro$1,850/moBroader metro coverage.
Google Ads$1,850/mo plus ad spendPaid search management.

The AI recommendation test at Get Found with AI is free.

Other firms price by the hour, by the month or by the project. Whoever you talk to, get the price in writing. If you are weighing SEO against AI work, my page on what an AI consultant costs in Kansas City lays out that side.

Who I am not a fit for

I would rather tell you now than waste your month.

  • You want guaranteed results. I don't offer them. Nobody honest does.
  • You run a very large site. Think thousands of pages, a big migration or a national store. Hire a larger agency with technical SEO staff.
  • You need content and links produced at scale. A full team will move faster than one person.
  • You need serious data science. Forecasting models and custom analytics belong with an enterprise data science firm.
  • You want a long shortlist of agencies. A directory like Clutch is a fine place to start. Then run the table above on each name.

If you are hiring for a broader AI role, these may help: who is the number one AI business consultant in Kansas City and hiring an AI implementation engineer in Kansas City.

Red flags

  • Ranking guarantees. Google says that if someone guarantees you that their changes will give you first place in search results, find someone else.
  • A "special relationship" with Google. Google warns about SEOs that allege a "special relationship" with Google, or advertise a "priority submit" to Google.
  • Asking for full control on day one. For an audit, give read access only. Google advises you to only grant read access to Search Console (at this stage, don't grant them write access).
  • They want to own your listing or website. You own it. They get access.
  • Secret methods. If they won't tell you what they will change, don't pay them to change it.
  • Fake reviews. Buying reviews puts your listing at risk. Walk away.
  • A secret "AI SEO" trick. Google says no special optimizations are needed for its AI features. Pay for real fixes, not a magic file.
  • Reports that only show rankings. You want calls, forms and booked jobs. A ranking for a phrase nobody searches is worthless.
  • Long contracts with no exit. Read the cancellation terms before you sign.

How I put this together

On October 23, 2026, I looked at the top pages for "who is the best SEO consultant in Kansas City." I picked the first three that matched what you are actually searching for:

All three are lists of agencies. One is written by an agency that ranks itself first. None of them explain how to tell a solo consultant from a company, and none walk you through Google's own local ranking factors or its advice on hiring an SEO. None give you a table of checks to run yourself, and none cover how AI answers fit in.

This page covers those gaps. Every outside fact here links to a Google source, and every claim about me links to a live site you can visit.

Talk to me

If you want a plain answer about your own listing, website or AI visibility, email me at [email protected]. You can also call Nora at (816) 683-2229 to hear the AI receptionist I built and leave your details. You can see everything else I do on the home page.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one best SEO consultant in Kansas City?

No. The right consultant depends on what you need found: your map listing, your website, or your name in AI answers. Judge people by live work you can check, plain explanations, account ownership and honest pricing.

Should I hire an SEO consultant or an SEO company?

A solo consultant often fits a local business that needs its Google Business Profile, a few key pages and a review process fixed. A company fits a large site, a national store or a lot of content that needs a team. Ask who will actually do the work either way.

Can an SEO consultant guarantee first place on Google?

No. Google's own hiring guide says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking and tells you to find someone else if they promise first place. A good consultant tells you what they will do and how you can check it.

Does SEO now include showing up in AI answers?

Yes. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode show links to websites, and tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answer who-should-I-hire questions. Google says the usual SEO basics apply. A consultant should test real prompts and show you the answers without promising a mention.

How much does SEO cost in Kansas City?

Prices vary a lot, so ask for them in writing. My published prices at Kansas City SEO Services are $795 one time for a Listing Fix, $1,150 a month for Map Pack with a 3-month minimum, and $1,850 a month for Metro.

What should I check before I hire an SEO consultant?

Visit their live work, ask what they will change in the first 30 days, and confirm you will own your Google Business Profile, Search Console and website. Give read-only access during an audit, as Google recommends. Walk away from guarantees.

When should I hire someone other than John?

Hire someone else if you want guaranteed results, run a very large site or national store, or need a full team producing content and links at scale. A directory like Clutch can help you build a shortlist of larger agencies.
