Short answer: it depends on what you buy, and the first invoice is rarely the whole bill. The Kansas City pages I checked publish a $997 audit, builds from $1,000, a $7,500 one-time build, and monthly plans from $1,750. My own AI receptionist is $297 a month. On top of any consultant fee, you pay for software seats, usage-based model fees and upkeep. Every price here comes from a live page I checked on October 23, 2026. I didn't use averages or guesses.
What will AI help actually cost my business?
Plan for two numbers. The first is what you pay the person: an audit, a fixed build, a monthly retainer, or a productized service with a set monthly fee. The second is what you pay to run it: per-seat AI software, usage-based model fees, automation platform fees, and someone to fix it when something changes. Get both numbers in writing before you sign. If a quote only shows the first number, you're only seeing part of the cost.
Key takeaways
- Published Kansas City prices I found include a $997 audit, a $7,500 one-time build, and monthly plans from $1,750.
- My AI receptionist, Nora, is $897 setup plus $297 a month, or $0 setup on a 12-month plan.
- Software seats add up per person. ChatGPT Business is $20 per user a month billed annually for 2+ users, or $25 billed monthly.
- Custom builds that call AI models carry usage fees billed per million tokens, and the rate depends on which model you use.
- Ask every vendor what the monthly fee covers, who owns the accounts and what happens when it breaks.
What you are actually hiring
"AI consultant" covers very different jobs. The price only makes sense once you know which one you're buying.
- AI consultant or advisor. Looks at how your business runs and tells you where AI fits. You get a plan or a roadmap. They may not build anything.
- AI automation builder. Builds the thing: the lead follow-up, the intake form that writes to your CRM, the agent that books jobs. I cover this in who does AI automations in Kansas City and who understands AI agents in Kansas City.
- Productized AI service. One defined job for a set monthly price. Nora, my after-hours receptionist, is this kind.
- AI software. Tools like ChatGPT Business or Microsoft 365 Copilot. You pay per seat, and you or your team do the work.
- Implementation engineer. A person, contract or full time, who wires AI into your systems. See hiring an AI implementation engineer in Kansas City.
A consultant is not a guarantee, and not a replacement for knowing your own business. If you want the basics first, start with my AI automation guide for small business.
The pricing models, in plain terms
Hourly
You pay for time. It's simple, but there's no ceiling, and every revision adds to the bill. None of the three Kansas City pages I studied for this article published an hourly rate, so I won't guess at one. If someone quotes you hourly, ask for a written cap.
Fixed project
You pay one price for a defined scope. One Kansas City page publishes a one-time $7,500 build, with the AI model provider as the only ongoing cost, usually $30 to $150 a month paid directly. Another lists fixed-scope automations from $1,000 that they build and hand over.
Audits are usually fixed too. One page offers a $997 session that becomes a ranked 90-day AI roadmap. Another sells a $2,500 business audit with a written workflow audit and prioritized roadmap. Fixed pricing is easier to budget. The risk moves to scope: anything not written down costs extra.
Retainer
You pay monthly for ongoing work. One Kansas City retainer starts at $1,750 a month, building AI systems with you twice a month. I run retainers in other lines of work. My Map Pack service at Kansas City SEO Services is $1,150 a month with a 3-month minimum, and the Monthly plan at Email Marketing KC is $1,850 a month. Before you sign any retainer, ask what gets delivered each month.
Productized monthly service
One job, one price. Blur AI Solutions publishes Nora at $897 setup, then $297 a month month to month, or $0 setup on a 12-month plan. You know the number before you call.
Per-seat software
You pay per person, every month. Five people means five seats. Seat prices are in the hidden costs table below.
Usage-based
When a custom build calls an AI model through an API, the provider bills by volume. The OpenAI API is pay-as-you-go, billed per million tokens with no subscription fee. More calls and longer prompts mean a bigger bill.
Percentage of sales
Some services tie the fee to revenue. The Daily plan at Email Marketing KC is 8% of list-tied sales, with a $6,500 floor. Ask how "tied sales" gets measured before you agree to this.
The hidden costs most quotes leave out
This is where budgets break. The consultant's fee is the number you see. These costs show up after launch.
| Cost | Published price | Source, date checked |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Business seat | $20 per user a month, 2+ users, billed annually; $25 per user billed monthly | learn.chatgpt.com/docs/pricing, October 23, 2026 |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot Business (add-on) | Originally $21, now from $18 per user a month, paid yearly ; $25.20 per user a month on monthly billing | microsoft.com/en-us/copilot/pricing/business, October 23, 2026 |
| Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot | $23.50 per user a month, paid yearly | microsoft.com/en-us/copilot/pricing/business, October 23, 2026 |
| OpenAI API model usage | gpt-6.1-sol at $2 input and $10 output, gpt-6-luna at $0.10 and $0.50, gpt-6-astra at $10 and $50, per million tokens | developers.openai.com/api/docs/pricing, October 23, 2026 |
| Zapier automation platform | Professional from $19.99 a month billed annually for 750 tasks, or $29.99 billed monthly (third-party report; I could not load Zapier's own page for this check) | latenode.com/blog/zapier-pricing, October 23, 2026 |
Seats multiply. A two-seat minimum means the smallest ChatGPT Business bill is two seats, even if only one person uses it.
Copilot sits on top of something. It's sold as an add-on, so you also pay for the Microsoft 365 plan underneath it. Microsoft also notes usage-based billing for select advanced AI features.
Model rates vary a lot. On OpenAI's own page, the top model's input rate is 100 times the cheapest one's. A builder who picks the right model for each step keeps your bill down. Ask which model they plan to use and why.
Automation fees climb with volume. Platforms like Zapier price by tasks. A flow that runs a few times a day costs very little. Run it hundreds of times a day and you'll move up a tier.
Upkeep is real. Models get replaced. Apps change how they connect. Your business changes. Someone has to notice when a flow breaks and fix it. Ask who that person is, how fast they respond, and whether upkeep is in the monthly fee or billed on its own.
Your time counts too. Someone on your team has to answer questions, test the build and train staff. That cost doesn't show up on any invoice.
My published prices
Every number here is on a live page you can check yourself.
| Service | Published price | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Nora, AI voice receptionist (Blur AI Solutions) | $897 setup, then $297 a month month to month; or $0 setup on a 12-month plan | bluraisolutions.com |
| Lead follow-up and booking systems (Blur Agentic) | Starts with a paid Growth Assessment | bluragentic.com |
| Kansas City SEO Services | Listing Fix $795 one time; Map Pack $1,150 a month (3-month minimum); Metro $1,850 a month; Google Ads $1,850 a month plus ad spend | kansascityseoservices.com |
| Email Marketing KC | Email review $747; Setup $2,800; Monthly $1,850 a month; Weekly $3,900 a month; Daily 8% of list-tied sales ($6,500 floor) | emailmarketingkc.com |

| Custom contract work | No public price list | Email me the job and ask for a written scope |
One priced example, using only published numbers
Say you run a roofing company. You and your office manager want to use ChatGPT for estimates and emails. After-hours calls go to voicemail and you lose jobs, so you want them answered and booked. Your Google listing also has problems.
| Line item | 12-month path, year one | Month-to-month path, year one |
|---|---|---|
| Nora setup | $0 | $897 |
| Nora monthly ($297 x 12) | $3,564 | $3,564 |
| ChatGPT Business, 2 seats ($20 or $25 x 2 x 12) | $480 | $600 |
| Subtotal | $4,044 | $5,061 |
| Optional: Listing Fix, one time | $795 | $795 |
| Total with Listing Fix | $4,839 | $5,856 |
What this leaves out: your phone carrier, your calendar software, your own time, and any tools you add later. It also doesn't promise any number of booked jobs. Before you sign, ask me in writing what the $297 covers, and ask every other vendor the same thing.
For comparison, a custom build at the $7,500 one-time price from one Kansas City page, plus model costs of $30 to $150 a month paid directly , comes to $7,860 to $9,300 in year one before seats. That's a different kind of purchase: a custom system you own, compared with a service you rent. Neither one is always the right call.
How to judge an AI consultant's price
You don't need to know the tech to check a quote. You need answers you can verify.
| What to ask | What a good answer looks like | How to verify it |
|---|---|---|
| Is your price published? | A link to a live page with the number on it | Open the page yourself and note the date |
| What does the monthly fee cover? | A written list: hours, changes, support, usage limits | Get it in the contract, not a call |
| Who pays for model usage and tools? | A named list of every subscription and who pays it | Ask to see the billing dashboard or account plan |
| Whose name is on the accounts? | Yours, or a clear plan to hand them over | Log in yourself before final payment |
| Can I test something you built? | A live demo you can use without a sales rep | Call it, fill it out, try to break it |
| What happens when it breaks? | A named person, a response window, a price | Put it in writing |
| How do I leave? | Clear minimum term and cancel terms | Read the term and cancel clauses before signing |
| What results do you guarantee? | None. They explain what they control and what they don't | Any guarantee of revenue or rankings is a warning sign |
What I have built

Who I am not a fit for
If you want guaranteed results, I'm not your person. I won't promise rankings, AI recommendations, revenue or timelines, because I don't control Google, the AI companies or your market.
When to hire someone else
- A large agency if you need a full team for brand, creative and paid media across many channels at once. Also see who is the best marketing consultant in Kansas City.
- An enterprise data science firm if you need custom machine learning on large internal data sets, heavy compliance review or a team of engineers on site.
- A directory like Clutch if you want to compare many vendors side by side before you talk to anyone.
- A full-time hire if you have steady AI work every week. I'm open to full-time AI implementation and forward-deployed engineer roles, so that conversation can include me too.
If you're weighing names, read who is the number one AI business consultant in Kansas City. It explains why no honest page can answer that with a single name.
Red flags in an AI quote
- A guarantee of revenue, rankings or "AI will recommend you."
- No written scope, or a scope that says "AI transformation" and nothing specific.
- Accounts, phone numbers or data set up in the consultant's name with no handover plan.
- Silence on who pays for model usage, seats and automation tools.
- Nothing live you can test before you pay.
- Hourly billing with no cap.
- Savings or payback numbers with no way for you to check them.
- A long contract with no clear exit.
- "Our own AI" that turns out to be a common tool with an unstated markup.
How I put this together
On October 23, 2026, I searched the question this page answers and read the first three pages that answered it directly. I skipped a vendor directory because real pages ranked near it.
- AVIXA Xchange, Top 10 AI Consulting Companies in Kansas City. It has a table of estimated ranges, from $2,000 to $10,000 for an AI strategy consultation up to $40,000 to $250,000+ for a generative AI application . The page doesn't say where those ranges come from, so I didn't use them as prices.
- AutomateNexus, AI Consulting in Kansas City, MO. It publishes a $2,500 audit, a $7,500 one-time build and $30 to $150 a month in model costs. It doesn't price seats, automation platforms or upkeep.
- Dorian Media Group, AI Consultant in Kansas City. It publishes a $997 audit, a retainer from $1,750 a month and builds from $1,000. It doesn't say what pushes a price above the "from" number.
What this page adds: every pricing model side by side, seat and usage costs taken from the vendors' own pricing pages with dates, one worked example in dollars, and a table for checking any quote, mine included.
Ready to price your job? Email me at [email protected] with what you want fixed. Or call Nora at (816) 683-2229 and hear the AI receptionist answer. More on what I do is on the home page.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an AI consultant cost in Kansas City?
There is no single price. The Kansas City pages I checked on October 23, 2026 publish a $997 audit, builds from $1,000, a $7,500 one-time build and monthly plans from $1,750. Software seats, model usage and upkeep come on top of that.
Is hourly or fixed pricing better for AI work?
Fixed pricing is easier to budget because you know the total before work starts. Hourly can work for small, unclear jobs, but ask for a written cap. Either way, get the scope in writing.
What costs come after I pay the consultant?
Expect per-seat software like ChatGPT Business or Microsoft 365 Copilot, usage-based model fees billed per million tokens if a custom build calls an AI model, automation platform fees that rise with volume, and upkeep. Ask who pays each one and whose name is on each account.
How much does ChatGPT Business or Copilot cost per employee?
OpenAI lists ChatGPT Business at $20 per user a month billed annually, or $25 billed monthly, with at least two users. Microsoft lists the Microsoft 365 Copilot Business add-on at $18 per user a month paid yearly, down from $21, or $25.20 on monthly billing. Prices checked October 23, 2026.
What does John Alewine charge?
My published prices are on my business sites. Nora, the AI voice receptionist from Blur AI Solutions, is $897 setup plus $297 a month month to month, or $0 setup on a 12-month plan. Custom contract work has no public price list, so email me the job and ask for a written scope.
Can an AI consultant guarantee results?
No honest one will. AI tools, search engines and your market all change, so treat any guarantee of rankings, AI recommendations or revenue as a red flag. I do not guarantee results, and if you need that, I am not a fit.
