Getting found in AI search means making your business easy for ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to reach, read and verify, so they can name or cite it. In my October 26 test, 21 of 24 Kansas City answers listed a directory or review site. The technical fixes are cheap; being named depends on mentions nobody can guarantee.
Bottom line
Start with the free fixes if you have a website and a Google Business Profile: let the search crawlers in, get indexed in Google and Bing, and put your facts in plain text.
Pay for listings help if your Google, Bing or directory listings are wrong and you would rather hand the cleanup to someone else.
Skip paying for an llms.txt file or special AI markup unless it comes bundled with the basics, because Google says no AI text files are needed.
Short on time? Check your robots.txt in 1 minute to see if ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude can even reach you. Then run my free 5-prompt AI visibility self-test to see what the assistants say about you today.
Key facts
- OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI crawler docs, read 2026-10-28).
- Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no AI text files, special markup or schema (Google Search Central, read 2026-10-28).
- 21 of 24 Kansas City AI answers (87.5%) listed a directory or review site (my test, 2026-10-26).
- None of the 4 Kansas City businesses AI named first had an llms.txt file (my audit, 2026-10-28).
- Google users clicked a result link in 8% of visits with an AI summary, 15% without (Pew Research, 2025).
What getting found in AI search is, and what it is not
Getting found in AI search is plain work in a set order. You let the search crawlers in. You get indexed in Google and Bing. You put your facts in plain text on your pages and make your listings match them. You earn third-party mentions and reviews. Then you re-test every month.
There is no submission form and no paid placement. A magic llms.txt file will not do it, and no honest vendor can promise you a spot. Google says you do not need AI text files or special markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
AI search optimization (some call it AEO or GEO), classic SEO and Google Business Profile work share most of the same foundations. What changes is where you check. Classic SEO checks rankings. Profile work checks the map results. AI search work checks what the assistants say and which sources they list.
Where each assistant gets local answers
Each vendor documents its own crawler or source. This table sticks to what their docs say, so you know what to check for each one.
| Assistant | Crawler or source it documents | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT search | OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. ChatGPT-User visits a page when a user asks, and OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to it. | OAI-SearchBot is allowed in robots.txt, and your firewall allows OpenAI's published IP ranges. |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in Perplexity results and is not used for model training. Perplexity-User fetches a page when a user asks. | PerplexityBot is allowed in robots.txt and its published IP ranges are not blocked. |
| Claude | Claude-SearchBot works to improve search result quality. Claude-User fetches pages when a Claude user asks. | Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User are allowed. Anthropic says disabling them may reduce your visibility in user search results. |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Googlebot and the Google index. Supporting links must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. | Your pages are indexed in Search Console and you have not turned off snippets. |
| Gemini app | Google's crawl. The Google-Extended token controls use for training future Gemini models and for grounding in Gemini Apps. | Make a deliberate choice on Google-Extended. Google says it does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search. |
| Microsoft Copilot and Bing | Bingbot and the Bing index. Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance (public preview) reports citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries. | Bingbot is allowed, your site is verified in Bing Webmaster Tools, and you check Total Citations and cited URLs. |
"OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features. Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links."

How to get your Kansas City business found in AI search, step by step
1. Write your business facts once
Open a plain document. Write your exact business name, phone, hours, service area, main categories, services, and your prices or how you price.
This is your fact note. Every page, listing and profile should match it word for word.
Time: My estimate: 30 to 60 minutes.
Done when: You can paste one note that answers who you are, where you work, when you are open and what you charge, with no "it depends" left in it.
2. Test what assistants say now and log the sources
Ask the assistants the money question your customers ask, such as "best roofer in Kansas City." Write down whether you were named and every site each answer listed.
My free AI visibility scorecard runs 5 prompts across 5 assistants and grades the answers in your browser.
Time: My estimate: 30 minutes.
Done when: You have a log showing each question, each assistant, whether you were named, and every directory or review site in the answer.
3. Let the search crawlers in
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. Make sure OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Googlebot and Bingbot are not disallowed. A rule such as User-agent: OAI-SearchBot followed by Allow: / is enough.
Then check your firewall or Cloudflare bot settings. OpenAI and Perplexity both recommend allowing their published IP ranges. A file can say yes while a firewall says no. Use the robots.txt checker below.
Time: My estimate: 10 minutes for the file, longer if a firewall or host is involved.
Done when: The checker shows 5 of 5 search crawlers allowed, and your firewall has no rule blocking them.
4. Get indexed in Google and Bing
Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and submit your sitemap to both. Google says a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to show as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Turn on IndexNow if your site supports it. You submit changed URLs to one endpoint, such as Bing, and participating engines share them. I ping IndexNow on every publish.
Time: My estimate: 1 to 2 hours.
Done when: Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools both show your homepage and each service page as indexed.
5. Match your Google Business Profile and Bing Places to the fact note
Google says "Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity." You cannot move your shop. You can make your profile complete and detailed, which is the relevance part.
Copy name, phone, hours, categories, service area and description from your fact note into both Google Business Profile and Bing Places.
Time: My estimate: 1 to 3 hours.
Done when: Both profiles match your fact note exactly, and every field you can fill is filled.
6. Put the answers in plain text on your pages
Give each service its own page that states the service, your price or how you price, your service area and a short FAQ. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "query fan-out," issuing multiple related searches. Separate pages give those searches separate answers to find.
Put the text in the server HTML, not inside images or widgets. Add LocalBusiness schema only if it matches what is visible on the page, because Google requires that match.
Time: My estimate: half a day to 2 days.
Done when: You view the page source (Ctrl+U), search for your price and "Kansas City," and find both in the raw HTML.
7. Get listed and accurate on the directories and lists the answers cite
In my test, 21 of 24 Kansas City answers listed at least one directory or review site. Across all 42 answers, the most-listed sites were clutch.co (13), themanifest.com (11), thumbtack.com (10), bestinkc.com (9) and yelp.com (7).
Use your step 2 log to find the sites in your trade. Claim or fix your profile on each one. Copy your fact note into it.
Time: My estimate: 2 to 6 hours, spread over a few weeks while profiles get approved.
Done when: Every directory from your step 2 log has your profile, and its name, phone and hours match your fact note.
8. Ask for reviews that name the service and the town, then re-test monthly
Ask happy customers to say what you did and where, such as "replaced our roof in Overland Park." Reply to every review. If more calls start coming in, my missed call revenue calculator shows what an unanswered one costs.
Each month, re-run the step 2 questions. Log every answer as Absent, Mentioned, Cited or Recommended.
Time: My estimate: 15 minutes a week for reviews and 1 hour a month for the re-test.
Done when: You have a ledger with at least one month of entries, and every new review has a reply.
Check your robots.txt in 1 minute
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt, copy the whole file and paste it below. The check runs in your browser, and nothing leaves it.
Check your robots.txt for AI crawlers
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt in a new tab, copy all of it, and paste it here. Nothing you paste leaves this page.
The checker reads the file only. Firewalls, Cloudflare bot settings and IP checks can still block a crawler the file allows, so test those separately. Training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) are your call. Blocking them is a separate choice from the search crawlers, which decide whether answers can show you.
Our data: what the Kansas City businesses AI named first have, and what mine have
On October 26, 2026, I asked Gemini (with Google Search grounding) and Grok (with web search) one money question about each of 7 of my businesses, 3 runs each, for 42 answers. On October 28, 2026, a script checked the homepage, robots.txt, /llms.txt and sitemap for the 4 Kansas City businesses those answers named first on 2 agency questions and for my own 8 sites. It sent the OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot user agents only, not their IP ranges. The sample is 2 assistants, 1 day and 12 sites, so treat it as a pattern to test.
| What I checked | 4 KC businesses AI named first | My 8 sites |
|---|---|---|
| robots.txt names any of the 8 AI crawlers | 1 of 4 | 8 of 8 (all 8 crawlers named) |
| Blocks a search or answer crawler (OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot) | 0 of 4 | 0 of 8 |
| Blocks a training crawler (GPTBot, ClaudeBot or Google-Extended) | 1 of 4 (blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended) | 0 of 8 |
| Homepage answered the OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot user agents with HTTP 200 | 4 of 4 | 8 of 8 |
| Sitemap found | 4 of 4 | 8 of 8 |
| Business schema (Organization or LocalBusiness type) on homepage | 2 of 4 | 8 of 8 |
| FAQPage schema on homepage | 0 of 4 | 6 of 8 |
| /llms.txt | 0 of 4 | 8 of 8 |
| Markdown copy linked from homepage | 0 of 4 | 1 of 8 |
| Dollar price on homepage | 0 of 4 | 6 of 8 |
| "Kansas City" in homepage text | 3 of 4 | 5 of 8 (3 of mine serve the whole U.S.) |
| Median words in raw server HTML | 984 (463 to 4,033) | 2,265 (907 to 4,378) |
The files make a site readable, but they did not decide who got named. The 4 businesses named first had no llms.txt, no FAQPage schema and no homepage price. In this small sample, being named lined up with mentions on the directories and lists the answers cited. My own gaps: only 1 of my 8 homepages links a Markdown copy, and 2 of 8 (KC Roofing Directory and Get Found with AI, both my businesses) show no dollar price.
| Site | Answers that listed it (of 42) | Search crawlers blocked in robots.txt |
|---|---|---|
| clutch.co | 13 | Could not read |
| themanifest.com | 11 | Could not read |
| thumbtack.com | 10 | No |
| bestinkc.com | 9 | No |
| yelp.com | 7 | Yes, all but /article pages |
| expertise.com | 6 | No (blocks the training crawlers GPTBot and ClaudeBot only) |
| agencylist.com | 6 | Could not read |
| trustanalytica.org | 4 | No |
| bbb.org | 4 | No |
| angi.com | 4 | No |
| designrush.com | 3 | No |
clutch.co and themanifest.com answered my script with a 403, and agencylist.com answered with a 429. Several directories refused my script outright, which is common bot protection on data center traffic and not proof they block the real crawlers. I rechecked two cells by hand the same day after a scripted timeout. Download the October 28 audit CSV and the October 26 AI answers CSV.
Example 1: KC Roofing Directory and Crypto Guidance, both my businesses, were named first in 6 of 6 answers. Their questions were narrow: "best directory for finding roofers in Kansas City" and "who is the best crypto consultant in Kansas City."
Example 2: Kansas City SEO Services and Email Marketing KC, also my businesses, were named in 0 of 6 answers on crowded questions ("best local SEO company in Kansas City" and "best email marketing agency in Kansas City"). Both have the AI files. That is why I do not sell files as the answer.
Mistakes that cost the most
Blocking OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot without knowing it
This often comes from a template, a plugin or a firewall default. OpenAI says opted-out sites "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." The cost is 100% of ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links. The fix costs $0 and, by my estimate, 10 minutes.
Fix: allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt, then confirm your firewall does not block them.
Skipping the directories and lists the answers read
In my test, 21 of 24 Kansas City answers listed a directory or review site: 21 / 24 = 87.5%, close to 9 in 10. If you are missing or wrong on those sites, you are missing from the sources most local answers leaned on. Doing it yourself costs $0. A done-for-you cleanup like the Listing Fix from Kansas City SEO Services (my business) is $795 one time.
Fix: claim and correct your profile on every directory your step 2 log shows, using your fact note.
Judging AI search work by website clicks alone
Pew Research Center found that users clicked a traditional result link in 8% of visits with an AI summary vs 15% without one: 8 / 15 = about 53%, close to half as often. Only 1% of visits included a click on a link inside the summary. If you count clicks only, you can be named and still think nothing changed.
Fix: track Absent, Mentioned, Cited and Recommended on a monthly ledger, and check Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance.
Do it yourself vs listings help vs AI visibility testing vs doing nothing
| Option | Cost | Time to set up | Your effort | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself with this guide | $0 plus your time | My estimate: 2 to 4 days of work spread over a few weeks | High | Owners who like hands-on work and have clean listings |
| Kansas City SEO Services Listing Fix (my business) | $795 one time, credits 100% to Map Pack within 60 days | Not published, ask during the free Map Pack Check | Low: answer questions and grant access | Messy or unclaimed Google, Bing and directory listings |
| Kansas City SEO Services Map Pack (my business) | $1,150 a month, 3-month minimum, launch fee waived | Not published, ask during the free Map Pack Check | Low: approve posts and send review requests | Owners who want posts, reviews and citations kept up monthly |
| Get Found with AI (my business) | Free 9-answer AI test first, then ask after the free test | Starts with the free test | Low | Owners who want assistants tested by hand and re-tested monthly. No placement is promised. |
| Doing nothing | $0 up front | None | None | Nobody. The costs are in the mistakes above. |
If you are weighing other help, my guide to choosing an SEO consultant in Kansas City covers what to ask, and my Kansas City SEO cost page lists published prices.
My pick for most Kansas City businesses: do steps 1 to 6 yourself this month, because they cost $0. If your Google or Bing listing is a mess, get the free Map Pack Check from Kansas City SEO Services (my business) before you pay for anything. If you want the assistants tested by hand every month, ask Get Found with AI (my business) for the free 9-answer test.
How I ordered the steps
| Criterion | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Documented by the assistant's own vendor | 30% | Whether OpenAI, Google, Perplexity, Anthropic or Microsoft says it in their own docs |
| Effect on whether assistants can reach, read and verify you | 25% | How directly the step changes access, readability or confirmation from other sources |
| Cost to do | 20% | Dollars out of pocket |
| Time to do | 15% | Hours of work, by my estimate |
| Easy for you to check yourself | 10% | Whether you can confirm it is done without paying anyone |
Vendor documentation leads because it is the only part of this you can read straight from the companies that run the assistants, instead of guessing.
Get Found with AI and Kansas City SEO Services are my businesses, and their prices appear above. The robots.txt checker on this page is free and sends nothing to me. My 8 sites appear in the audit as a comparison group and are not counted among the businesses AI named first. More about me is on my about page.
Where to start, by type of business
Home service trades with a service area (plumber, HVAC, roofer, electrician)
Best first move: set your service area and categories in Google Business Profile and Bing Places from your fact note, then claim thumbtack.com, angi.com and bbb.org.
Watch out for: a service area that does not match your website pages, so each source tells the assistants something different.
Trade-off: Google ranks local results partly on distance, and you cannot change where customers search from.
Storefront or office businesses customers visit (restaurants, clinics, shops)
Best first move: make hours and categories match everywhere, then ask for reviews that name what the customer bought.
Watch out for: relying on Yelp alone. Its robots.txt blocks the ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude search crawlers on all but /article pages, so collect Google reviews too.
Trade-off: review work never ends, and you cannot control what customers write.
Professional services and agencies competing on "best X in Kansas City" questions
Best first move: get accurate profiles on the agency lists the answers cited: clutch.co (13 of 42), themanifest.com (11), expertise.com (6), agencylist.com (6) and designrush.com (3).
Watch out for: expecting files to carry you. My own Kansas City SEO Services (my business) has them and was named in 0 of 6 answers.
Trade-off: the business named first changed between runs, so one good answer is not a win and one bad answer is not a loss.
- If you are a trade with a truck: start with steps 3 and 5. Watch out for mismatched service areas. Once calls come, my list of 7 AI automations for Kansas City service businesses helps you answer them.
- If you are a storefront: start with steps 5 and 8. Watch out for counting only Yelp reviews.
- If you are an agency or consultant: start with steps 2 and 7. Watch out for judging progress by one run of one assistant.
Who this is not for
Businesses with no website or listings yet. There is nothing for a crawler to read. Start with a Google Business Profile and a one-page site that states your facts in plain text, then come back to step 3.
National brands with many locations. Managing dozens of profiles by hand does not scale. A multi-location listings platform fits better.
Anyone who wants a placement promise. Nobody can sell that honestly, because the vendors do not offer one. If you want broader marketing help instead, see my guide to choosing a marketing consultant in Kansas City.
How I put this together
On October 28, 2026, I read the 3 top pages on Bing US for "how to get found in ai search local business." DuckDuckGo showed the same 3 in the same order.
Birdeye's guide shows Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity results side by side and covers Google Business Profile, Bing Places and structured data. It is written for multi-location brands. It has no first-party data, no crawler detail, no costs and no step checks.
Stackmatix's guide uses clear question headings and includes a monthly maintenance loop and a short FAQ. The advice is general, with no data of its own, no vendor docs quoted, no prices and no local market.
ProsperQR's playbook is strong on reviews: asking in person, replying to every one and keeping a steady pace. It says nothing about crawlers, robots.txt, Bing, indexing or how to measure.
This page adds: the vendor crawler docs quoted exactly, my own 42-answer test and 12-site audit with CSVs, 8 steps with Done-when checks, mistakes priced with the math shown, published Kansas City prices, a free robots.txt checker and a plain statement of what nobody can promise.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT?
Let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, get indexed in Google and Bing, put your facts in plain text, and make your listings and directory profiles match. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. None of this makes ChatGPT name you, but it improves the chance of being named or cited.
Can I pay to get my business listed in ChatGPT or Gemini?
Not that I can find. None of the vendor docs I read from OpenAI, Google, Perplexity or Anthropic describe paying for a spot in answers, and Google says no special optimizations are necessary for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Anyone selling a placement is selling something they do not control.
Do I need an llms.txt file to show up in AI search?
No. Google says you don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. In my October 28, 2026 audit, none of the 4 Kansas City businesses AI named first had an llms.txt file.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
No vendor publishes a timeline, so anyone who quotes one is guessing. By my estimate the crawl and listing fixes take days of work, but answers change from run to run. The only honest measure is the same questions re-tested every month on a ledger.
Does blocking GPTBot keep my business out of ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI says GPTBot is for training foundation models, and disallowing it is independent of OAI-SearchBot, the crawler for ChatGPT search answers. You can allow OAI-SearchBot and disallow GPTBot.
How much does AI search optimization cost in Kansas City?
It is $0 if you do the steps yourself. Kansas City SEO Services (my business) charges $795 one time for the Listing Fix and $1,150 a month for Map Pack with a 3-month minimum, and Get Found with AI (my business) starts with a free 9-answer AI test. More published Kansas City prices are on my SEO cost page.
How do I know if ChatGPT or Gemini mention my business?
Ask them the questions your customers ask, in clean sessions, and log whether you are absent, mentioned, cited or recommended and which sites each answer lists. My free self-test runs 5 prompts across 5 assistants in your browser. Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance also shows how often Copilot and Bing AI summaries cite your pages.
Start with what costs nothing. Run the robots.txt checker, then run the 5-prompt self-test and write down what the assistants said. If you want a second set of eyes, ask Get Found with AI (my business) for the free 9-answer AI test, where no placement is promised. You can also ask Kansas City SEO Services (my business) for the free Map Pack Check, or email [email protected] with what the assistants said about you.
