An AI stack cost estimate adds up what a business pays monthly for model tokens, voice minutes, a phone line and workflow runs. My sample (2,000 AI tasks, 900 call minutes, 2,000 workflow runs) costs $93.80 a month at November 1, 2026 prices. Units are cheap, but voice and per-step workflow fees grow fastest; build and upkeep cost extra.
Bottom line
Start with n8n Cloud Starter and a small model like Haiku 5.5 or GPT-6 Luna if your AI mostly handles text and runs fewer than 2,500 workflows a month.
Pay for a voice engine like OpenAI GPT-Live-1 ($0.05 a minute) if phone calls are where you lose customers, and expect voice to be your biggest line.
Skip flagship models like GPT-6 Astra and Fable 5.1 unless a cheaper model fails your own test examples.

Key facts
- OpenAI's GPT-Live-1 voice model costs $0.05 a minute (OpenAI, Nov 1, 2026).
- Claude Sonnet 5.5 costs $2 input and $10 output per 1M tokens (Anthropic, Nov 1, 2026).
- Zapier Professional costs $193.50 a month, billed monthly, for 10,000 tasks (Zapier, Nov 1, 2026).
- n8n Cloud Starter costs $24 a month, billed monthly, for 2,500 executions (n8n, Nov 1, 2026).
- Only 2 of 40 readable ranking pages cover tokens, voice minutes and workflow runs together (my audit, 2026-11-01).
What an AI stack cost estimate is, and what it is not
An AI stack cost estimate is the monthly usage and plan cost of the services that run your AI: a model API, a voice engine, a phone line and a workflow tool. It is what you pay vendors once the thing is built and running.
It is not a per-prompt token bill. It is not the price of a ChatGPT or Claude chat seat. It is not a build quote, and it is not a promise of savings.
Three units get mixed up. Tokens are the small chunks of text models bill by, priced per 1 million. Minutes are what voice engines and phone carriers bill by. Workflow tools count work differently: Zapier counts each action step as a task, while n8n counts a whole run as one execution.
AI stack cost estimator
Enter your model, monthly AI tasks, calls and workflow runs, and you get a monthly and yearly total with the biggest line called out. It runs in your browser, sends nothing anywhere and asks for no email.
Estimate your monthly AI stack
Enter what you expect in a normal month. Prices were read from each vendor's page on November 1, 2026. Nothing you type leaves this page.
Make is not included: its pricing page did not show a price table to my script on November 1, 2026, so I could not verify it. Prices change; check each vendor's page before you buy.
How the math works
- Model tokens: tasks x input tokens / 1,000,000 x input price, plus tasks x output tokens / 1,000,000 x output price. Prices come from the OpenAI and Anthropic pricing pages.
- Batch: cuts the token line by 50%, because both OpenAI and Anthropic offer half price on batch processing. It only fits work that can wait, never live calls or chat.
- Voice: calls x minutes per call x the engine's per-minute rate (OpenAI GPT-Live-1, Twilio Conversation Relay or ElevenLabs Speech Engine).
- Phone line: the Twilio number fee + minutes x Twilio's carrier rate for local or toll-free, inbound or outbound.
- Zapier: tasks = runs x action steps, priced at the smallest Professional tier that covers them, monthly or yearly.
- n8n: executions = runs, no matter how many steps, priced at the smallest Cloud plan that covers them.
Here is the worked sample the estimator loads by default. 2,000 AI tasks at 1,500 input and 500 output tokens each on Claude Sonnet 5.5 is 3,000,000 input tokens x $2 per 1M = $6.00, plus 1,000,000 output tokens x $10 per 1M = $10.00, so $16.00. 300 calls x 3 minutes = 900 minutes on GPT-Live-1 at $0.05 = $45.00. The Twilio local line is $1.15 + 900 x $0.0085 ($7.65) = $8.80. 2,000 runs on n8n Starter use 2,000 of 2,500 executions for $24. Total: $16.00 + $45.00 + $8.80 + $24.00 = $93.80 a month, or $1,125.60 a year, and voice is the biggest line at 48%. Swap n8n for Zapier billed monthly and the same 2,000 runs x 3 steps = 6,000 tasks need the 10,000-task tier at $193.50, so the total jumps to $263.30 a month.
Vendor prices I used, read November 1, 2026
I read every price below with a script in headless Chrome on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Each item links to the vendor's own pricing page, so you can check me. All prices are in US dollars.
| Model | Input per 1M tokens | Output per 1M tokens | 2,000 sample tasks cost |

Make is not in these tables or in the estimator. On November 1, 2026, Make's pricing page rendered an empty plan table in headless Chrome and returned a bot check ("Just a moment...") to a plain request. Its help center says credits replaced operations as the billing unit, but it gives no current price list. I will not guess a price, so if you are weighing Make, price it from Make's own page.
What this has to do with AI search
The stack you price here is the same stack that answers your customers. If an AI agent picks up your phone or replies to your web chat, its cost is a real line in your budget, right next to rent and payroll.
There is a second tie. Make's pricing page and the #3 Google result for this query both showed my script a bot check or an empty table today. AI crawlers can run into the same wall. In my audit, only 7 of 40 ranking pages link to any vendor's own pricing page, and only 13 of 40 put a date next to their prices. If you want ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Gemini to quote your prices, publish them in plain HTML text, with a date, and let the search crawlers in.
"Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links."
OpenAI, crawlers documentation
"There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary."
Google Search Central, AI features
Anthropic says that disabling Claude-SearchBot "may reduce your site's visibility and accuracy in user search results", and Perplexity says PerplexityBot "is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity." None of this promises an assistant will name you. Readable, dated prices improve the chance of being named or cited. For the full how-to, read how to get your Kansas City business in ChatGPT and Gemini, and check where you stand with the AI visibility scorecard.
Our data: what 40 ranking AI cost pages leave out
On November 1, 2026, I pulled Google US page 1 through Serper for 5 queries: "ai stack cost calculator", "ai automation cost calculator", "ai voice agent cost per minute calculator", "monthly cost of ai tools for small business" and "cost to run ai agent per month". I dropped Reddit, Quora, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn posts, opened the 43 unique pages left in headless Chrome, and 3 would not load past a bot check, leaving 40. The checks are keyword and link matches on visible text, so treat them as a screen, not a reading of every word.
| What I checked | Pages (of 40) |
|---|---|
| Show a dollar figure | 36 |
| Cover LLM tokens | 25 |
| Cover voice minutes | 8 |
| Cover workflow runs (Zapier, Make, n8n, tasks or executions) | 8 |
| Cover all three (tokens, voice minutes, workflow runs) | 2 |
| Mention a phone line or carrier (Twilio etc.) | 7 |
| Show a date next to their prices | 13 |
| Link to at least one vendor's own pricing page | 7 |
| Ask for an email address on the page | 19 |
| Mention small business | 13 |
| Mention AI search terms (AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, AEO/GEO, llms.txt) | 10 |
| Use FAQPage schema | 20 |
| Median length | 1,701 words |
| robots.txt blocks AI crawlers | 1 site (aionx.co blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) |
| Would not load for a script (of 43 opened) | 3 |
Only 2 of 40 pages cover tokens, voice minutes and workflow runs together, so most of them price a third of your bill. 19 of 40 ask for your email. The top 2 results for "ai stack cost calculator" are enterprise data-platform tools, not small business calculators. The raw rows are in the audit CSV.
Two examples show why the whole stack matters. In the worked sample, the model is only $16.00 of $93.80; voice is $45.00, the larger share. And the same 2,000 tasks cost $0.80 on Haiku 5.5 or GPT-6 Luna, $8.00 on GPT-6.1 Terra, $16.00 on Sonnet 5.5, $32.00 on Opus 5.5 and $80.00 on GPT-6 Astra or Fable 5.1. That is a 100x spread for the same work.
How to estimate your AI stack cost, step by step
1. Decide what the AI actually does
Write one sentence: is it a workflow that moves data, a chatbot that answers questions, or an agent that takes actions? If you are not sure, read AI agent vs chatbot for small business first.
Time: about 30 minutes (my estimate).
Done when: you can name the job, the channel (phone, chat, email, forms) and the tools it touches.
2. Count a normal month from your own records
Pull last month's numbers: inquiries or tasks, calls and the average call length, and how many times each workflow would run. Count the action steps in each workflow too.
Time: 1 to 2 hours (my estimate).
Done when: you have four numbers written down: tasks a month, calls a month, minutes per call, and runs times steps.
3. Measure tokens on 10 real examples
Run 10 real customer messages or jobs through the model and read the input and output tokens off the dashboard. Most model dashboards show tokens per request. Average them.
Time: about 1 hour (my estimate).
Done when: you have an average input and output token count from your own data, not a guess.
4. Pick the cheapest model that passes
Start with Haiku 5.5 or GPT-6 Luna and move up only if answers fail on your 10 examples. Then enter that model and your token counts in the estimator.
Time: 1 to 2 hours (my estimate).
Done when: all 10 examples pass on one model and the estimator shows its monthly token line.
5. Pick the voice engine, phone line and workflow tool
Choose a voice engine and a local or toll-free line, then enter your runs and steps. Read the n8n vs Zapier comparison in the results, since the gap grows with every step.
Time: 30 to 60 minutes (my estimate).
Done when: the estimator shows all four lines and you know which one is biggest.
6. Add a buffer, set alerts, re-read prices
Add 20% for retries and growth. That is my rule of thumb, not a vendor number: on the sample, $93.80 x 1.2 = $112.56 a month. Set spend alerts in each vendor account and re-read the pricing pages every quarter.
Time: about 30 minutes now, then 15 minutes a quarter (my estimate).
Done when: your budget number includes the buffer, every account has an alert, and a quarterly price check is on your calendar.
Mistakes that cost the most
1. Running every task on the flagship model
The 2,000 sample tasks cost $80.00 on GPT-6 Astra or Fable 5.1, $16.00 on Sonnet 5.5 and $0.80 on Haiku 5.5 or GPT-6 Luna. Flagship vs Sonnet is $80.00 minus $16.00 = $64.00 a month more, or $64.00 x 12 = $768 a year, for the same volume.
Fix: test the cheap model on 10 real examples first and only move up when it fails.
2. Counting Zapier runs instead of tasks
2,000 runs x 3 steps = 6,000 tasks. That needs the 10,000-task Zapier tier at $193.50 a month, not the 2,000-task tier at $73.50. The gap is $120 a month, or $1,440 a year. n8n bills the same 2,000 runs as 2,000 executions for $24.
Fix: multiply runs by action steps before you pick a Zapier tier, and price n8n for the same runs.
3. Pricing voice at the phone carrier rate only
Twilio local inbound is $0.0085 a minute, so 900 minutes is $7.65. The voice engine adds $45.00 (GPT-Live-1) to $72.00 (ElevenLabs) for those same minutes. Toll-free inbound is $0.022 a minute, or $19.80 for 900 minutes, before the $2.15 number.
Fix: price voice as engine + carrier + number, every time.
Build it yourself on usage pricing vs buy a done-for-you service
| Option | Monthly cost | Time to start | Your effort | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Do-it-yourself lean stack on n8n (Sonnet 5.5, GPT-Live-1, Twilio local) | $93.80 | Days to weeks | High: you build and maintain it | Owners who can build, or who have someone who can |
| Same stack on Zapier, billed monthly | $263.30 | Days to weeks | Medium to high | Teams already deep in Zapier with few steps per run |
| Cheapest-model stack (Haiku 5.5 or GPT-6 Luna, same voice, phone and n8n) | $0.80 + $45.00 + $8.80 + $24.00 = $78.60 | Days to weeks | High | Simple, high-volume tasks that pass on a small model |
| Voice-only line (GPT-Live-1 + Twilio local, 900 minutes) | $45.00 + $8.80 = $53.80 | Days | Medium to high | Call answering with no workflow behind it |
| Blur AI Solutions done-for-you after-hours call answering (my business) | $297, plus $897 setup, or $0 setup on a 12-month plan | Set up for you; ask for a date | Low | Trades that want calls answered and will not build it |
My pick for most small businesses: start with the do-it-yourself lean stack on n8n, using the cheapest model that passes your 10 test examples. It covers my sample for $93.80 a month, or $78.60 on Haiku 5.5 or GPT-6 Luna, and you can switch vendors later. If calls are your biggest line and nobody on your side will build and maintain a voice agent, compare a done-for-you option such as Blur AI Solutions (my business) or read what an AI receptionist costs in Kansas City.
How I compared the options
| Criterion | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Total monthly cost at your volume | 30% | The estimator's monthly total for your numbers |
| Cost growth as volume rises | 20% | How fast the bill climbs per extra minute, task or step |
| Owner time to build and maintain | 20% | Hours you or your staff spend setting up and fixing it |
| Time to first working version | 15% | How soon it answers a real customer |
| Ease of switching vendors | 15% | How hard it is to move to another model, voice engine or workflow tool |
Cost leads because this page exists to give you a real monthly number before you commit money.
Disclosure: Blur AI Solutions is my business, and it is the only one of my services priced on this page. I get nothing from OpenAI, Anthropic, Twilio, ElevenLabs, Zapier or n8n. The estimator is free, asks for no email and sends nothing to me.
Where to start, by type of business
Trades and home services with lots of calls
Best first move: price voice first. In the sample, 900 minutes on GPT-Live-1 is $45.00, 48% of the total.
Watch out for: toll-free numbers. Inbound toll-free is $0.022 a minute vs $0.0085 local, so 900 minutes runs $21.95 with the number vs $8.80.
Trade-off: building it yourself is cheaper per month; buying it done-for-you costs more but takes the build and upkeep off your plate.
Shops and clinics with mostly text (web chat, email, forms)
Best first move: set voice to none and test Haiku 5.5 or GPT-6 Luna. The 2,000 sample tasks cost $0.80 on either.
Watch out for: per-step workflow pricing. Your workflow tool can cost far more than your model.
Trade-off: a small model is cheap but may miss harder questions, so keep your 10 test examples and rerun them after any change.
Solo consultants and agencies building for clients
Best first move: run each client's volume through the estimator and hand them the copied breakdown with dates.
Watch out for: Zapier task counts across many multi-step workflows; n8n Pro covers 10,000 executions for $60 billed monthly.
Trade-off: n8n Cloud is cheaper per run, while Zapier may be faster to set up if your client already uses it.
- If you are a trade that misses after-hours calls: start with a voice engine and a local Twilio number. Watch out for voice becoming most of your bill as calls grow.
- If you are a text-first shop or clinic: start with no voice and the smallest model that passes. Watch out for Zapier tiers when each run has several steps.
- If you build for clients: start with n8n and a per-client estimate. Watch out for prices changing, and re-read vendor pages every quarter.
Who this is not for
Companies running their own models on their own GPUs or a data warehouse. This page prices hosted APIs, not servers. Use an infrastructure calculator like the Databricks one described below.
Teams that only pay for chat seats like ChatGPT or Claude subscriptions. Seats are a flat monthly fee, not usage. A seat-subscription tracker fits better.
Anyone who wants a fixed quote with promised savings. Nobody can honestly sell that, because your bill follows your volume. Ask for a written quote instead, and if you want to compare against people or hours, try the AI agent vs hire calculator or the hours-saved calculator.
How I put this together
On November 1, 2026, I checked the pages ranking for "ai stack cost calculator" on Google US. The #1 result, the Databricks Generative AI Pricing Calculator, lets you pick cloud, region, model, tokens and queries per minute, and honestly notes that it "provides only an estimate". It prices only Databricks-served models, with no voice, no workflow tools and no date on prices.
The #2 result, The Modern Data Company's AI cost calculator, explains every formula and says where public pricing did not exist. It asks for name and work email before showing results, lists older models like Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and does not cover voice, workflow runs or small business.
The #3 result, altstreet.investments, returned a bot check to both a browser and a plain request, so I could not read it. The #4 result, aistack.sh, is a fast tracker for seat subscriptions with overlap checks, but it has no API usage, voice minutes, workflow runs, dates or source links.
This page adds: tokens, voice minutes, the phone line and workflow runs in one monthly total; every price dated and linked to the vendor's own page; Make left out and explained; a first-party audit of 40 pages; the AI search angle; numbered steps with Done-when checks; priced mistakes; and no email gate. More about me and how I work is on my about page.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to run AI tools for a small business each month?
It depends on your volume. My worked sample comes to $93.80 a month: $16.00 in model tokens, $45.00 in voice, $8.80 for a Twilio local line and $24.00 for n8n Starter, covering 2,000 AI tasks, 900 call minutes and 2,000 workflow runs at prices read November 1, 2026. Build time and upkeep are not included.
How much does an AI voice agent cost per minute?
At prices read November 1, 2026, OpenAI GPT-Live-1 costs $0.05 a minute, Twilio Conversation Relay costs $0.07 a minute plus your model's tokens, and ElevenLabs Speech Engine costs $0.08 a minute. Add the phone line on top: Twilio charges $0.0085 a minute to receive calls on a US local number, plus $1.15 a month for the number.
Is n8n cheaper than Zapier?
For workflows with several steps, usually yes, because n8n bills a whole run as one execution and Zapier bills each action step as a task. In my sample, 2,000 runs of 3 steps cost $24 a month on n8n Starter and $193.50 a month on Zapier Professional billed monthly ($129 a month billed yearly). For a few two-step Zaps, Zapier's free plan with 100 tasks a month may be enough.
Which is cheaper, OpenAI or Claude?
At list price they match tier for tier on most models I priced: GPT-6 Luna and Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100K tokens) both cost $0.10 input and $0.50 output per 1M tokens, GPT-6.1 Sol and Sonnet 5.5 both cost $2 and $10, and GPT-6 Astra and Fable 5.1 both cost $10 and $50. The gap is in the middle tier (GPT-6.1 Terra at $1 and $5, Opus 5.5 at $4 and $20) and in caching details. Pick the model that passes your own test examples.
How many tokens does a typical AI task use?
It depends on your prompt and how much context you send, so measure 10 real examples in your model's dashboard instead of guessing. The estimator's default of 1,500 input and 500 output tokens per task is an example, not a benchmark.
What is not included in an AI stack estimate?
Build time, your own hours to maintain the stack, chat subscription seats, data residency (+10% on OpenAI) or US-only inference (1.1x on Anthropic), and any vendor I could not verify, such as Make. It is also not a promise of savings.
Why is Make not in this estimator?
Because I could not read its prices on November 1, 2026: the pricing page showed an empty plan table in headless Chrome and a bot check to a plain request. Make's help center says credits replaced operations as the billing unit but gives no current price list, so price Make from its own pricing page.
Run the estimator with your own numbers and copy your estimate. Then email it to [email protected] and ask me for a second look at the stack, or, if your biggest line is calls, see the Blur AI Solutions pricing (my business). For fixed vs usage costs and the starter vs production stack, read the full guide on how much it costs to run an AI business.
